COMMON REFRACTIVE ERRORS

Myopia- The patient can see near but not far – common from a young age.

Hyperopia- The patient can see far much better than near- increases with age.

Presbyopia- loss of near vision, typical in patients over 40.

Astigmatism- irregular curvature of the cornea (clear window on front of eye).

All of the above may be treated with glasses, contact lenses or surgery.

LASIK is acceptable for the younger Myopia (40 years old or younger) but quickly loses efficiency over 40 when cataracts begin to rob us of our natural ability to focus. (~42=Presbyopia) Lens implant surgery may correct any refractive error, always part of cataract surgery, providing patients a multitude of options today to reduce eyeglass dependence.
